Ponsse wanted to make the various phases of assembly less dependent on time and space. They wanted to have the facility to change the routines if necessary. An assembly line on rails wouldn't have been flexible enough, and assembling the machines on wheels wouldn't have worked either. By means of air bearings one single operator can move a 10-15 tonne forest machine from one assembly station to another.

The air bearings do not require any fixed installations, which rails, for instance, would have required. The plant can be enlarged and the production layout can be changed as desired.
