ABB Azipod
Handling system for podded propulsion units in production
When ABB Azipod started manufacturing large podded propulsion units, they had to choose a handling system. The capacity of the overhead cranes in their Helsinki factory was inadequate, despite the fact that they lifted 160 tonnes. Should they invest in new overhead cranes or were there other alternatives?
At this point Solving's air film system was considered. A radio-controlled air film transporter moves the 250-tonne propulsion units between assembly cells and the testing areas.
The lifting capacity, the flexibility and the precision with which the heavy units can be moved and positioned, provide enormous advantages. The units can even be positioned to within millimetres!
